Preliminary Ecological Appraisal

A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) is the first stage in assessing a site's biodiversity value and its potential to support protected species. It aims to identify any potential ecological constraints that may be present at the Site, and identifies any mitigation measures and any further ecological surveys to inform an Ecological Impact Assessment (where required).

Protected Species Surveys

Our licenced ecologists can design, lead and report protected species surveys that may be required to support an impact assessment or protected species licence.

Biodiversity Net Gain Survey

Biodiversity net gain (BNG) is an approach introduced under the Environment Act 2021 . It aims to ensure that any new developments leave nature in a better state than it was before, which means creating more habitats for wildlife and improving the quality of existing ones. A BNG survey is required for the majority of developments that require planning permission.

QGIS Mapping

Our experienced QGIS specialists can assist with producing plans to support BNG assessments, PEA, EcIA and protected species Reports

National Vegetation Classification Survey

The National Vegetation Classification (NVC) is a standardised methodology used to classify plant communities in Britain. Species abundance data is collected in the field and then compared against data collated within the five NVC volumes to allow accurate classification. The data gathered during NVC surveys can help to ascertain condition of a site and also how best for the site to be managed.

Ecological Impact Assessment

An Ecological Impact Assessment is usually required to inform a planning application. An EcIA aims to identifies important ecological features that may be affected by a project, assesses any potential impacts, and outlines mitigation, compensation and enhancements of the project.

Protected Species Licencing

When development works are likely to result in impacting protecting species, a protected species licence is required. Our surveyors can assist with applying for protected species licences from Natural England on your behalf.

Ecological Clerk of Works

As part of a protected species licence an Ecological Clerk of Works might be required to ensure works are conducted in a way to ensure that the protected species aren’t impacted. Our ecologists have experience fulfilling this role.

UKHab Survey

UK Habitat Classification (largely referred to as UKHab) provides a comprehensive and unified approach to habitat surveying in the UK. It is required for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and is now often required by Local Planning Authorities in Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs) and  Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs). UKHab can also be useful for gathering baseline data for conservation projects.
